1 Reviews of the Boston Canopy

By: TheWildBunch  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2010   Rating:

Although we got this last year this is the first time we've used it.

Weather conditions were glorious sun, torrential rain for 12hrs and windy up to 4 gusting 5 Beaufort.

It took 30mins to put up and I needed assistance to get the poles up only (till they were roughly pegged in).

Pros:

Its big and very cool under on a sunny day.

Its dry and protective under on a rainy day and we were able to cook on it and with great care we even had a small disposable bar-b-q under it after that was lit and its flames & smoke had died down.

Excellent for drying clothes under on those misty/rainy days/nights. We put 2 (removable) lines up between the outer 2 down poles (be careful) and they took everything we had to offer.

100% waterproof!

Its a very sturdy structure and makes an excellent place (on the legs) to hand things (use S-hooks) like food (in shade), rubbish, utensil bags up out of the way.

This is a well made and robust canopy and does pretty much everything to says it does.

Quality was good, but there was a small hole in the canopy roof (about 2mm), which although it never leaked there, it was a surprise to find in a brand new item. It looked like the hole was caused by the poles when the canopy was packed, they had nicked a hole somehow, the nick was across a fold crease.

Cons:

The erection/fitting/connection instructions were useless and confusing. Best read them and then work out for yourself how its put up, then put it up.

TIPS - the metal hook bits (they fit into the holes in the poles) are at the opposite end from the tent, put them into these holes last, then reposition all the pegs, so you can now hammer the pegs in. With these hooks as far away from the tent door the fabric tubes for the poles upper most, with the canopy on the ground you then add all the poles, then raise the poles one at a time from the tent end first. Peg the overlap ropes down the sides of the tent, then peg the ropes for each pole section in turn (rope straight out except for the end pair which face forward.

When it pours with rain you need to adjust the flow off so that it move along the canvas either fore or aft otherwise you'll get soaked every time you try to exit at the sides and water might even start building up on the floor under the canopy, just where you will want to be the next day!

Improvements:

This is a canopy and not an extension, however it would be good if there were sides and a front door that could be zipped in/out to the first section (to the pole) to allow you to seal off that area when out or at night. This would allow you to cook outside in the canopy in all weather and so extend your tent a little and have a weatherproof porch area.

I would buy this again. Its ideal for stay put camping, though we won't be taking it with us if we tour.
